Gradovi u pobuni

transverzalno iskustvo

Cities in revolt

transversal experience

The hypothesis of the project “Cities in revolt” is that links between different initiatives in struggles that are going on right now in Madrid or in Croatia, form a pool of interchange and solidarity that builds a transversal struggle in the territory which has a potential to change the living conditions in the city.

Although the scale of the current economic and social situation in Spain and Croatia is quite different, these two Euro-Mediterranean countries share many similarities, such as the crash of the real-estate bubble, high unemployment and implementation of austerity measures. This facts enabled us to focus on parallel processes that are happening right now in 2013 in the social context of Madrid and Croatia. Since we are members of a grass-root initiative our method of developing the project was twofold - we used the opportunity of being in Madrid to discuss directly with some of the protagonists of the broad social struggle that is happening right now in Madrid (here we published interviews with Gonzalo Garate and Ignacio Sancez). On the other side, we continued our involvement in different initiatives in Croatia, struggling for similar goals as our comrades in Spain. This twofold approach helped us to investigate specific tactics of social engagement in two different situations, such as Madrid and Croatia. The Madrid part of the project was focused on learning, the Croatia part of the project was focused on implementation and evaluation of learned tactics.

The result of the project can also be seen from two angles. On the one side in the development of some new initiatives in Croatia right now. On the other side, our experience of implementation of "Madrid learned tactics" in Croatian context can be seen as one sort of feedback to the Madrid initiatives. The main question of the current stage of the project "Cities in revolt" is how the common experience of local struggles can be used to expand the network of solidarity over similar global problems that are obviously common.

The project was realized as a part of a resident program of Reina Sofia Museum in the year 2013.
